ANGUILLA I LOVE YOU

Just came back from my trip to Anguilla with Jahnee. We had such an incredible time and not even pictures  could really do justice. We spent everyday on a boat or yacht, watched the sunset, made amazing new friends, drank too much, partied, when night sea swimming in a tropical storm, snorkeled, and saw so many beautiful things. I am truly blessed.

I've always been addicted to this song. The lyrics, I think, are relatable to everyone's life in one way or another. I have been "Mr. Intentional" and I've known a few as well. So often we don't really listen to the words of our favorite songs. I mean REALLY listen. In a world where music has lost it's soul and focus of truly inspiring and THOUGHT PROVOKING lyrical content, can I really be mad? Artist Spotlight: RETNA and EL MAC

I first saw Retna and El Mac's work on Western in LA a few years back. They drew this beautiful woman and I immediately remember thinking "I wanna feel whatever she's feeling cuz it looks damn good". The painting was so large with so much detail that I nearly got in an accident trying to look at it. Finally one day I just pulled over and really viewed it in all it glory. The particular picture I'm talking about is below and I think is still over there on Western and Sunset. Check it.

It's THAT kinda Saturday. Check out Sleigh Bells and their music video for "Infinity Guitars. They are bad ass live. I saw them at Coachella last year and was unimpressed but then saw them at the El Rey Theater in LA a few months ago and they killed it. If your gonna be at Coachella this year (YIPEEE!) check em out.

 

SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED

So, I haven't updated my blog in loooong while but today is a new day and so much has happened over the past 9 months. One thing in particular is a wonderful collaboration with the Classic Brothers.
The story goes something like this...

About 4 years ago on my quest into the depths of myspace I ran across a page with some funky beats that really captured my ear. I begged this fellow myspace user who resided in the Netherlands, to "pretty please" send me some beats to write to. With hesitation he did so and with motivation I wrote what was one of many versions to a song that would eventually be titled "Floatin". This lovely gentleman, who goes by the name of Merlin and is one half on the Classic Brothers, dug what I wrote and that was that.

Let's zoom 2 years later... I'm on the road with Macy Gray and we happen to be living in Antwerpen, Belgium for 2 months and I suddenly remember that Mr. Merlin lives only a short distance from Amsterdam....soooooo I begged Macy's driver to "pretty please" take me to this strange man's studio in a foreign country so that I can record this song with him in person (we had been exchanging ideas via garageband). Being the expert beggar that I am he gave in and took me...with Macy in tow(she wasn't gonna let me go alone!). I recorded the song and it was lovely. A few months later he sent me another track which I then wrote while working in Jamaica which would be titled "Beast". The Classic Brothers, Merlin & Bob, loved the song and so I recorded it professionally in the states and sent them the files.

Fast Forward a year and a half...The Classic Brothers get signed to Magnetron Music and the rest is history... aka I have two songs on their debut album!

M.I.A. DOESN'T LIKE REDHEADS

I kid, I kid. However, on a more serious note this video is graphically necessary. I like M.I.A. because she has so much to say and the director, Romaine Gavras, really captured a message. I've interpreted and related this short film to so many things in society (including the individual human struggle) that I'm probably over-thinking it entirely. What do you think her message is?

MUSICAL COLORS/Open letter to Kelis

I remember being 12 years old blasting "Caught Out There" in my room whenever my parents wouldn't let me have my way. Kelis, you were easily my favorite artist for the greater part of my early teens and even now. Kaleidoscope made me wanna rock my curls big and Pharrells voice would melt my 12 year old heart every time. Last year I saw you perform in Dubai at a birthday party and my 21 year old heart only grew more keen for you Ms. Jones (formerly Ms. Rogers). Your album "Tasty" was not my favorite but I still bought it without hesitation because like I said, I love you girl and you are, no lie, my first girl crush. However, we need to talk girl. What is going on with the video below and the song in general? I've stuck by you but this I cannot get with. From songwriter to songwriter....WHAT IS GOING ON?? Let me join your writing team and help bring back the Kelis we all grew to love! Don't get me wrong, I am all about progression and expression as an artist but your progressing into a Golden Avatar with overly written lyrics and it's upsetting me. I'm upset. Please don't disappoint me.
